Although our lives touched only briefly as 10 year old boys, we had one thing in common being born on the same day.

Reader's Digest used to run a column called "My Most Unforgettable Character." Ron Duncan will always be one of the most unforgettable characters of my life. From the time he hired me to work in his yard 40 years ago when I was in high school, to delivering flowers, to his helping my parents get in the flower business, to the time he and Judy stopped by my home here on the East Coast just a year or two ago -- Ron Duncan was a mentor and a friend. He was unfailingly gracious, friendly, kind -- and perhaps more than anything, he was funny. The Allens are all grateful to have known him, and we will all miss him.
