In 1963, she resigned her position as secretary to the Director of the Contract Airlift Branch to become a “stay at home” Mom.
They were the parents of three children: Scott Allen Kraus, Steven Daniel Kraus and Sara Lynn Kraus and grandparents to Jared Scott Kraus, Joseph Edward Kraus and Jonathan Lee Kraus. During her “stay at home mom” years, Carol was a room mother for each of her elementary age children; taught summer church Bible school; was a Cub Scout Den Leader and a registered Scout Leader for nine years; was a member of the church choirs at New Athens St. John UCC and Murphysboro St. Peter UCC .
Carol continued her education in 1977 at Belleville Area College (now SWIC) and graduated co-Valedictorian with an A.A. degree in 1980. The family moved to Murphysboro in 1982. Carol enrolled at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1983. Starting in 1984, she worked as an administrative assistant at the University and completed her college education. She was a dedicated genealogist for the Schwartz/Kehrer/Scher/Stoll and Kraus/Sinn/Rohr/Boehm families. She loved watching old Western movies and enjoyed searching for antiques and collectibles with her favorites being Boyd Teddy Bears and Steinbach Nut Crackers. Other than family memories, Carol’s outstanding life memory was of her and Kenny’s trip to South Africa which included a weekend safari in Kruger National Park and sleeping in a thatched hut in the game preserve.
