Dr. Robert D. Fricke

June 1, 1941 - May 20, 2018

Service Date: June 9, 2018

Robert D.  Fricke MD, FACP, ACG, 76, of Belleville, Illinois, born Sunday, June 1, 1941, in Chester, IL, peacefully passed away Sunday, May 20, 2018 at Memorial Hospital in Belleville, Illinois.

Dr. Fricke specialized in Internal Medicine with a sub-specialty in Gastroenterology.

He graduated from The University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago in 1969. He did his Internal Medicine Internship and then his two year Residency at Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago where he was voted “Medical Intern of the Year” by the attending staff. He also earned the “Outstanding Medical Resident Award.” He then was able to secure a fellowship in Gastroenterology at Presbyterian St. Luke’s. Upon completion, he secured a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of CA, San Diego where he practiced at the VA Hospital in LaJolla, CA. This is where he first fell in love with horse racing.

In 1978 he returned to Illinois where he settled in Belleville and joined the practice of Dr.’s Dexheimer, Wiltsie, Kugler, Boeshart and Ringhofer.  He was on staff at both Memorial and St. Elizabeth’s hospitals. Other doctors have observed that his medical knowledge and application of that knowledge was superb. He spent many hours in the medical library researching articles and he kept meticulously hand written medical records throughout his career. He belonged to multiple medical societies. He was loved by patients because he gave them time to talk and took a personal interest in each of them. He also had the most likable ability to laugh uproariously at the most ridiculous situations.

He had many interests that he loved to talk about. He loved to fish and to teach children to fish. He was an avid Cardinal baseball fan. He was a gardener and had a natural green thumb and most of all, he loved his race horses and inviting others out to see them.

He leaves behind many friends from all walks of life that will be telling Dr. Fricke stories for years to come.
