Donald T McCrady

September 24, 1927 - March 1, 2018

U.S. Veteran

Service Date: March 9, 2018

My mom, my uncle, my sister, and I all had the opportunity to learn from Mr. McCrady. I remember how excited my mom was, when she helped to enroll my sister and I at Signal Hill. Her enthusiasm was well warranted, as Mr. McCrady was the best music teacher I ever had. He believed in me and pushed me to become a better musician. He wanted us all to strive for excellence, and he wanted us to be unsatisfied with anything less than the best for ourselves. That helped to instill a strong, yet balanced work ethic that has served me well my entire adult life. I'm grateful to have known him and to have studied under him.

Mr. McCrady was the most influential teacher in my life. He gave me much more than music. He taught me (at a very young age) how to be self-disciplined, how to work hard for what I wanted, and how to succeed beyond my talents. I was in his band from 4th thru 8th grades, all of it -- concert, marching, solos, ensembles. Signal Hill Class of '64. He took a collection of little kids of varying talent, and turned us into polished, near-professional performing musicians. Not once, not a couple of possibly fluke years, but consistently and reliably for more than two decades. Our Concert Band ALWAYS won First Superior. As individuals, we all, always, won our 1st place blue medals. Same in our ensembles. He set the bar high and taught us how to reach it. Who does thaaat?! My sisters and I still talk about him today, fondky, appreciatively, and always with the utmost respect. God has called home His gift to so many children. He will be missed, but never, ever forgotten. See you in Heaven, Mr McCrady.

I was in Mr McCrady's band during the mid to late 1950's while a student at SHS. We all enjoyed his kindness and positive manner. He was surely a wonderful influence on all of us! He was such a good teacher to take a bumch of tone deaf kids and have us play well enough at our contests to win many awards and medals!! My sincere condolences to the family.

Mr. McCray was a wonderful band teacher. It has been a long time since I was in his band class, but I got the opportunity to learn how to play,17 different instruments. I loved every minute of it. We moved away in 7th grade or I would have continued learning more instruments. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. So sorry for your loss
