Service Date: August 12, 2017
Mary Grace Aycock, nee Young, 93 Years, of Swansea, Illinois, born Sunday, October 14, 1923, in East St. Louis, IL, died Sunday, July 30, 2017 at St. Paul’s Home in Belleville, Illinois.
Grace was a graduate of East St. Louis High School. Following a brief period in banking after high school, Grace joined General Box Company in East St. Louis, retiring after many years as Office Manager.
Grace was active in several organizations, providing leadership as an officer and through many hours of volunteer work furthering the groups’ goals. She served as treasurer for multiple organizations up to the time of her passing. In 1966, Grace and husband George Merrill spearheaded the founding of the Hi Green Lodge, an outgrowth of his professional membership in the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, bringing his fellow switchmen and their wives together to form a mutual benefit organization. Grace served as the initial president and in the second year took on the duties of secretary/treasurer, serving in that capacity for 51 years, recruiting members and managing the organization’s funds. She was also very active in the Wednesday Club as well as maintaining membership in the Kappa Tau chapter of Lambda Sigma Alpha, a sorority she joined while still in high school, a tenure of over 75 years. In addition, Grace was active in the Ainad Belles chapter of the Daughters of the Nile of the Al Sihah Temple No. 29 of East St. Louis, an affiliation that grew out of husband George’s induction into the Masonic order.
Grace enjoyed many activities and had a positive outlook on life, always finding ways to help others. Among her favorite leisure pursuits were summer auto tours of America’s parks with husband George, playing hostess for card parties and other get-togethers, taking trips with friends, organizing and leading mystery tours, patronizing local theatre seasons, and dining out with friends.
Grace is remembered and respected by many for her organizational skills and ability to see projects through to completion. One long-time friend commented that because of her great abilities, everyone else “reflected the glory she provided.” She will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by many.
