John S. Hackmann

John Sondermann Hackmann, 83, of Fairview Heights, born March 31, 1927 in East St. Louis, Illinois, died on Saturday, May 15, 2010, at his residence.

A graduate of Belleville Township High School, Mr. Hackmann enlisted in the Navy and served as a Seabee in the South Pacific 1945-46. He graduated from Washington University in 1949 and received his Juris Doctorate from St. Louis University in 1955. Mr. Hackmann then joined the staff at Illini Federal Savings and Loan Association (formerly State Savings and Loan Association). In 1989, after 34 years, Mr. Hackmann retired as President of Illini Federal Savings and Loan.

Mr. Hackmann served as President of Christian Welfare Hospital from 1963 to 1977. He, along with other civic leaders, raised funds and directed the construction of Anderson Hospital in Maryville, Ill in 1977. He served as President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees and helped guide the hospital through much growth, until he retired from the board in 1992.

Mr. Hackmann served many charitable organizations including Board of Governors and Champaign Chairman of the United Way, Community Progress, Chamber of Commerce, Optimist Club and several others. He also served in many organizations in the Savings and Loan industry including Teacher and District Governor of the American Savings and Loan Institute, Board of Directors for the Illinois Savings and Loan Association, and Charter Member of the Society of Real Estate Appraisers. He was a member of the American Bar Association and local bar associations.

Mr. Hackmann received the Jaycees Boss of the Year award, the Rotarian Paul Harris Fellow, and Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Society of Real Estate Appraisers and several Savings and Loan Associations.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4-7 pm, Thursday, May 20, 2010 at the Kurrus Funeral Home, Belleville, IL.

Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Friday, May 21, 2010 at Kurrus Funeral Home, with Rev. Larry Patton officiating.  Private family burial at Lake View Memorial Gardens.
